I am starting a social enterprise that provides skills-based volunteer opportunities for professionals. These busy individuals, who will volunteer their professional skills from 2-5 hours a week, on average, include marketing experts, publicists, strategy consultants, hedge fund managers and even nonprofit development staff. We recently launched our pilot program in New York City, and I find myself inspired as well as totally scared by our first, small batch of 100 professionals.

My friend Lisa is an advocate (lawyer) in the U.K..  While she’s practicing she has to wear not only long black robes, but also a white, pigtailed wig.  Apparently this is quite impressive in Scotland.  It also serves to make her and her identically clad fellow lawyers seem more anonymous, thereby partially protecting their identities from potentially disgruntled clients or defendants.

When you hear the term “ internet marketing “, what do you think of? For many, that term conjures thoughts of websites or spamming or search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing. For others, it’s all about graphical design, writing fancy code or even affiliate programs. All of those answers correct, but the essence of internet marketing is much simpler.

I’ve heard a lot about Gary Vaynerchuk. He is well known and widely lauded for his approach to personal branding for business owners. He “leveraged social media tools such as Twitter and Facebook to promote Wine Library TV,” a video blog about wine. He’s hob nobbed with Meredith and Ann on the Today Show, shared wine with Ellen and Conan and been featured on Nightline, among other appearances. So, when I was invited to participate in launching his book, I was happy to join in.

My job at Mass.Gov, as manager of the Massachusetts Recovery website, ended on September 30. I have hesitated to blog about it here for two reasons: 1) I do not want to “burn any bridges,” by writing negatively about an experience that did not work out for me and 2) I need to honor the standard contractor confidentiality agreement I was asked to sign before I was told my contract would not be renewed. The job was not a good fit.

A couple weeks ago I was at a small gathering of senior-level women, sharing professional experiences in a cozy living room over wine and snacks. I mentioned that I was teaching a two-hour workshop on Twitter for business. The response from one woman was not uncommon. “Two hours? And we still hardly hit the tip of the Twitterberg.

To blog or not to blog? To Tweet or not to Tweet? To Facebook or not to Facebook? Beyond the research that you should be doing on whether incorporating these marketing tactics into your social media plan is wise, you should also think about who’s managing those accounts, and how they’re being managed. Why? Think about it. Who’s actually building the relationships? Your employees are making the personal connections in these social media communities.

The beginning of October marked the annual customer User Conference for my company, iStrategy Solutions . It was a pleasure to meet so many smart, enthusiastic customers I have been speaking with on the phone and via email for the last three months. Since I traveled to BWI at the end of September and returned in early October, I had a chance to read AirTran’s September and October issues of its Go magazine. I found it interesting that the business author profiled in each issue so thoroughly and diametrically opposes the other.

With the redesign earlier this year , Facebook shifted to a far more real-time model of keeping up with your friends’ activities around the site. Some of the early criticism of the changes put “information overload” at the top of the list. At the same time, Facebook introduced an awesome and powerful way to filter your news feed to improve that signal to noise ratio. But in our opinion they didn’t quite go the distance in terms of making sure users knew it was available and explaining how to use it.

I was excited when I first picked up Douglas Rushkoff ’s book, Life Inc. : How the World Became a Corporation and How to Take It Back . I confess I expected it to articulate ideas and feelings I had, hopefully better than I could, and also flesh them out so they were more substantial. Yes, I was doing something I complain others do: looking for opinions that affirm my own rather than challenge them. In many ways, the book does all that.

Before we get to this I have to issue a disclaimer/warning. The following article will feature spoilers of major plot points in the Twilight Series and will do so with a level of contempt previously unheard of outside of the average review for a Michael Bay film. If you don’t want to have things spoiled or you cannot bare criticism on your beloved series, particularly in reference to Douchemaster Supreme Edward, then you should really find something more to your liking such as a current issue of Tiger Beat or anything found in the first third of your local Hot Topic.

Reviewing my experience at London’s SeedCamp and BizSpark , two leading events aimed at getting young companies mentorship and investment, it is glaringly obvious that start-ups don’t execute pitches as well as they could. In the business world, if you don’t successfully persuade an audience of your value, it’s worse than not having presented at all. Why am I so sure that start-ups need careful preparation to prevent dangerous mistakes in performance? First of all, it is my business.

Flashback to this past May.  As I anxiously prepare to cross the stage at graduation, three thoughts repeatedly cross my mind: 1- DO NOT TRIP AND FALL! 2- Someone get me out of these torture tents sweat suits robes! 3- How many days until alumni weekend? Despite my worst fears, my brief moment on stage was both elegant and graceful and I’m quite positive the black graduation robes- which we were warned may bleed through- actually helped me lose three pounds by ceremony’s end.  Sans three pounds (not to mention a dry-cleaning bill) and with my dignity intact, I looked forward to my triumphant return to Marist in the fall.

photo: source unknown We all are aware of the power of scarcity.  Not long ago, the Nintendo Wii was scarce around the  holidays and people went crazy trying to find one.  Never mind that the toy companies do this to us every holiday season – we still allow them to drive us to desperate measures with scarcity.  A client of mine in the restaurant business told me that when it comes to a buffet line, the restaurant should keep the pans full, not let the amount of food diminish too much or the patrons will see the food as scarce and will rush to fill up their plates with it, even if they don’t really want it.  I knew there was more than one reason I shy away from buffets.

In Sales What’s Your BrandBy Dee HaskelNike. Kleenex. QTips. While these are all household names, we first recognize the Brands because we know the quality behind them. When we shop for these products, we already know that by purchasing them, we will be getting a top quality product, that will last a long time. In most cases, these name brands are actually more expensive than their store labeled counterparts. Most people won’t care about paying a little more.

One of the biggest concerns in marketing these days is social media marketing, and one of the biggest concerns with social media marketing is coming up with the time to do it. Make no mistake about it, using tools (other than BP, of course) such as Twitter, Facebook, ActiveRain and a business blog can significantly grow your business, improve communication with your clients and customers and even open up new income streams for you. But it is not a magic bullet.

I’d like to share an update on a post I made over a year ago. Its about my on going saga of getting the word “Brian Wong” listed on Google’s search results for personal branding. In my previous post , I talked about how I got the number one spot on Google and then lost it when I screwed up the SEO on my pages when I switched to Wordpress and then got it back again after some tweaking. Hey, we all learn from mistakes right? Now I’m happy to report that my efforts have paid off.

The resume-preparation step comprises several sub-steps: Determine the focus of your resume. What kind of job or jobs will you be targeting? Your resume must target your desired career goal with precision. Job-seekers tend to forget that employers review resumes extremely quickly — often in just a few seconds. An employer taking such a quick glance should be able to immediately grasp what you want to do and have a sense of the value you can contribute to the organization.

LinkedIn has evolved into the largest online business networking platform – totaling 32 million users worldwide.  Prior to the social networking craze, LinkedIn was largely used to connect with past co-workers and trusted colleagues.  Now, however, LinkedIn has extended its capabilities to serve as a brand building platform for professionals looking to network, engage, and communicate with like-minded peers. The surge was accelerated during the recessionary period when laid off workers were looking to locate jobs and hopefully connect with others who could assist in the process.

Start by identifying the most likely places online for your name to come up. Google dominates the search engine market , and it’s also where the media looks first, according to ad firm Universal McCann. by Winson Yeung Many people believe that it’s difficult to achieve a top position on the Internet. Well, considering that most people search on Google for information, all we need is to learn some effective SEO strategies, in order to increase Google traffic. I have a cold. So, at the next red light, I grabbed the hand sanitizer that is always by my side these days, plopped some on my hands, and rubbed. I was still rubbing when the light turned green, which forced me to grab the wheel prematurely. As I tried to grip the steering wheel my hands began sliding all over the place.

If you haven’t been to a career fair lately, it’s time! Take advantage of these simple tips to make your attendance worth while: Tip #1: Get prepared by making a list of industries and employers in attendance at the event that are of interest. You don’t want to waste precious time at booths of employers with jobs unrelated to your search. Tip #2: Dress appropriately by dressing as you would for an interview. You’ll want to bring along a briefcase or writing portfolio so you can store your resumes and collect any brochures/contact information from various employer booths.

There’s been a lot of noise lately about health care in this country, and frankly I’m getting a little sick from it.  I thought about consulting my physician, but debate drain is not covered under my HMO.  And yes, that is the quality of joke I think this whole debate deserves. I am routinely mystified by the manipulation of language we see in public debate.  No one considers themselves to be anti-choice or anti-life, but that’s exactly the dichotomy that the abortion debate sets up.

By now you’ve probably read that after 44 staffers were laid off at CQ-Roll Call at the end of September,   veteran editor Brian Nutting e-mailed the entire editorial staff (and cc’d the newsroom) a letter demanding answers from management.  His email was immediately “leaked” online and a day later, he was fired for insubordination. A few days later, The Washington Post released new social media guidelines for its writers which take a pretty dim view of journalists having social media lives.

Sex is the core of many celebrities’ personal brands. These popsugar people make a living being hot. They play out their lives with others who are just as hot. Their brand Sexy Sells images are not just the output of stylists and press agents. Sex is the brand born out by these celebs’ behavior. It works because, like the core elements of all successful personal brands, sex isn’t just aped by these lookers.

They write hundreds of blogs, post many advertisements and start communications with many of the high profile networkers. They build huge networks within a couple of months. After spending two or three months they suddenly start feeling disillusioned. They wonder why nobody has given them any business. After all they have made hundreds of new contacts haven’t they? Just like the programs you might recall from the 1970’s, the plan is all about talking other people into selling what you’re selling. Yes, you heard right: the Wow Green compensation plan is about going out and creating your own competition. Leaving aside the question of why exactly you would do that, let’s ask the more important question: why does the Wow Green compensation plan expect you to do that? It’s not hard to understand why.

Coaching paradox Mon 5 : The paradox of coaching is that, all to often, courses tend to be aimed at turning the coachee into a coach. So, generalising, someone who has taken a course because of personal issues, then sets up in business to advise and guide others. Leaving aside issues of transference, learning from someone who has been through a similar situation does have its merits. What I question are the elements of indoctrination with virtually every coach I have come across to date.

Ted talked a bit about what izea was and how it came to be.

F reelancing, moonlighting, side jobs, and hustles – say these words to most people and they will immediately think you’re slacking off on your day job. Here are 10 reasons why you should create your own website: If you create your own website, you will not only have a lot more opportunity to generate sales from a product, you will also be involved in starting and expanding your business online. 1. To have your own website is like having your own house: ? It is your very own home on the Internet. After you have created your own website, you publish it on the net through a webhosting site and by registering a domain name.

What’s your time worth? It’s a question most people don’t know the real answer to. No matter how good of a personal brand you’ve established and no matter how effective you are at gathering a tribe of raving fans — your answer to this question is the single greatest determinant of whether you’ll achieve the wealth and success you want . Can you imagine an advantage that’s unique to you and that no one can take away from you? Well, in the 21st Century the only distinct advantage you have over your competitors is the ability to defy physics and multiply your time.

I blame it on the recession. In the past six months I’ve noticed an uptick in the number of requests from LinkedIn connections for Recommendations.  The more requests I’ve received the clearer it has become to me that there is a right way to go about asking for recommendations.  The key, as with so many other things in life, is to think first about what your final goal or intention is (thank you Steven Covey) and work backwards from there.

This plan involves talking all the people you can into selling the same things you’re selling, just like all the old programs from the 1970’s. That’s right: the Wow Green compensation plan is about creating your own competition, and making your job even more difficult.

Maria Ross, Owner and Chief Marketing Diva, of Red Slice –a branding, marketing and communications consultancy has several tips to share… #1: Be Relevant Don’t take the conversation down a rabbit hole. Stay on topic and don’t veer the conversation off course. This can just spiral out of control within the comments and frustrate readers – and the author. If you are an entrepreneur, ensure you are commenting on topics related to your business. #2: Be Brief Focus on 1 or 2 points within the post or article and react to those.

My curiosity with how people connect online has led me into a  job as a new media consultant. It seems a natural progression for me for the moment. If not for Facebook and Twitter, I wouldn’t have been able to keep in contact with my friends from Vietnam, as well as the volunteers from the rest of the world. I wouldn’t have known that Milena solved her transportation problems in Hanoi by buying herself a spanking new scooter. Elizabeth from the UK wouldn’t have been communicating with me about our post-Vietnam blues if not for Facebook.

So I moderated a panel last night entitled “What’s Next For News,” as part of the kickoff for Wordstock, an annual event put on by the Ryerson University School of Journalism in Toronto. As you can see from the photo (taken by Wayne MacPhail), I played middleman between veteran social-media skeptic Andrew Keen and “media futurist” Clay Shirky. Among other things, we talked about the rise of the Wikipedia model as a source of journalism — something I (and Clay) believe is still underappreciated by many media outlets — as well as the pressure for transparency and the need for jounalists to become brands.

Photo cred: PJ Rosenberger When you walk in (or call in) to a hair salon, you have two options.  Choose the stylist that you prefer, or have the next available one assigned to you. Earlier this week, following my post about personal branding while on the clock , I had a conversation on twitter about agencies and personal branding.  See where I’m going yet? From that conversation I came up with the concept of an agency, where the brand signing with the agency is familiar with the personal brands of each employee within that agency, and they are able to hand pick who they want to work on their project.
Generating Business Through Social Networking - bekanntheitsgrad-steigern.de

Some business owners arrive on social networking sites and immediately start working. A few then start criticizing existing members of the sites and with a bang and a puff of smoke; they leave.

by Winson Yeung Many people believe that it’s difficult to achieve a top position on the Internet. Well, considering that most people search on Google for information, all we need is to learn some effective SEO strategies, in order to increase Google traffic. As in any project, setting objectives that must be served and supported by the company’s website is the first decision in supply chain design. Whatever are the changes that will occur during the project, setting the fundamental goals is crucial.

by Ellie Gant Surprisingly, the Wow Green compensation plan demonstrates that some ideas are evidently too profitable to go away. Just like all the old programs from the 1970’s, this plan involves going around talking other people into selling the same thing you’re selling. Yes, you heard right: the Wow Green compensation plan is about going out and creating your own competition. Leaving aside the question of why exactly you would do that, let’s ask the more important question: why does the Wow Green compensation plan expect you to do that? It’s not hard to understand, when you really think about it.

by Ellie Gant As usual, the Wow Green compensation plan shows that the same old ideas are just plain too profitable to disappear. Just like the programs you might recall from the 1970’s, the plan is all about talking other people into selling what you’re selling. That’s right: the Wow Green compensation plan is about creating your own competition, and making your job even more difficult. Let’s not ask why exactly you would want to do that; let’s ask, instead, the underlying question: why does the Wow Green compensation plan want you to do that? It’s not hard to understand why.

It’s easier to admit something to your computer screen than to a person’s face. The anonymous world out there behind the monitor can lead us to reveal much more about ourselves than we should. But how much is too much? As you might have guessed, the answer is “It depends.” Look at Penelope Trunk . There is one thing I look for in a hire. It is non negotiable. I look for someone coachable. No matter how much skill they have, no matter how talented, no matter how much experience, no matter the industry experience, no matter how many years of successful quota attainment, if they aren’t coachable I don’t hire them. Coachable people recognize they have room to grow. Coachable people are more humble, secure and confident. The coachable look for alternative points of view.

I’ve been doing some reconnaissance reading about Twitter—why people use it and what they perceive its value to be. I am interested in what seems like an inherent paradox: Twitter is so widely and gleefully embraced as a tool for self-promotion ( boost your audience, boost your sales, build your personal brand ), and yet the prevailing wisdom on how to be an effective and popular Twitterer always seems to warn against being too . . . self-promotional.

I’ve been doing quite a lot of work recently on a variety of projects, some that are related to Grow A Better Business and some that are related to other work areas that I’m interested.  However, they have all had one thing in common  – how do I get my message across to an increasing number of people? This of course is the question that’s on everyones mind these days, especially as some businesses are struggling to maintain a foothold at all and  I realised that my own specialities are those that are highly relevant as a result.  Internet Marketing, can and does work, when it’s done consistently and appropriately and I wanted to share just a few ideas with you that may just help.

Yesterday, I was reading a great article from Copyblogger that talks about how to get your audience’s attention beyond the headline and carry them through the reading of the entire article. It struck me that a similar tactic could absolutely be used when writing a cover letter. Why not use your cover letter as a sales pitch? Why not write it the same way one would write to sell widgets, iPods, or your old Rollerblades? Okay, so it’s a different kind of product, but the concepts are the same.

One of the key things that are keeping businesses up at night is the fear of a social media brand crisis. Will’s philosophy- -Be willing to die for what you believe in -Where you are is not where need to be -Become something greater -There is no easy way -Don’t set out to build a wall; lay one perfect brick everyday -Make a difference; the world needs to be a better place because you were in it -Represent an idea -Create whatever you want to create -Believe; there is no reason for a “plan b” it just gets in the way of “plan a” -Don’t be a realist.

I have been noticing lately some handwringing, public and private, over the fact that social media marketing and PR folks do nothing but agree with each other in blog posts comments, and on Twitter et al. Nothing could be closer to the truth. This cohort is a friendly bunch, all  trying to promote social media as the communications wave of the future. I agree that healthy debate would be a lot more interesting, but I would stop short of disagreeing for disagreement’s sake.

William Buist is the subject of todays ecademy photo profile critique So the usual question, from visual first impressions is William’s profile image PPE (professional, personable and engaging) or FFF (fuzzy, faraway and forgetful)? Don’t forget to use my checklist as a reference and I’m always looking for volunteers and suggestions to critique, especially if you think the image is a particularly good or bad PPE or FFF example PPE.

As I continue to spend time on Twitter my understanding of the platform, and how to use it to grow a personal brand, evolves.  This post is not intended as my final thoughts on the subject, just a snapshot of my current thinking.Define your goals for social communications and how Twitter fits into these goals.  Twitter does not address all needs, blogs are still important, face to face communication is still important.  Twitter is but one tool and you should first understand how it is used and

Telephone conferencing/interviewing – look at your participant is a post from: Wally’s Follies That title sounds a little weird, I’ll admit. But I’m going to describe a simple technique I use that makes talking on the phone much easier. You can use this for phone interviews, telephone conferences, or just when you’re talking to somebody. If you can find a picture of the person you’re talking to, and if you’re using Outlook, this is really simple.

S ome things must be experienced a certain way to get the full effect. Take, for example, this one minute long video clip from The Human Centipede (First Sequence) , a film which just recently played at Fantastic Fest: Effective eh? I was certainly curious to read more but now that I have, I’m not so sure I’m as interested as I was at just seeing the clips. /Film suggests it’s one of the grossest films ever made while the folks at Dread Central love it.

Business Week columnist Stephen Baker has a brief comment on the Washington Post social media policy. He makes the point that usually it’s not so hard to represent both the company and your personal brand. I think he’s absolutely correct, but I also think some common sense needs to employed when it comes to social media usage by journalists. This isn’t a particularly revolutionary thought, falling well within the “don’t bite the hand that feeds you” aphorism.

This is an except from an article that discusses the power of a consistent color, view the full article here ! “Branding is really about business, how to package yourself in such a way so you are literally “picked” from the shelf. In today’s competitive job market, you will need to rely on more than your skills to get a position and establishing a personal brand will set you apart.” Pick a color… Pick a symbol in your color Make this color part of your interview outfit Follow

Do you want to standout from the crowd? Do you want people to recognize you immediately because they know exactly what you do? Branding. It is a process of making a mark in your chosen field of practice. It will differentiate yourself from your competitors. With it, you will easily get recognized and the community will get an impression of your expertise in your chosen field. Sometimes, choosing a brand for your self can be difficult. It seems like everyone is afraid of The Man these days. In this age of solo web entrepreneurs like Tim Ferris with his Four Hour Work Week ,  Seth Godin telling you All Marketers are Liars and Small is the New Big , and Chris Brogan telling you to Develop a Strong Personal Brand , it’s quite easy to believe that big companies aren’t necessary anymore. In fact, people like Steve Pavlina believe working for another company is a Sucker Bet and will hinder your personal success.

Research released today by Nikon reveals that Brits are seizing control of their ‘Personal Brand’ – the way in which they wish other people to perceive them – as they are taking and sharing images online. The study shows that with a quarter (24.7%) of us taking between 25-100 photos per month, we no longer want to share these images purely in an intimate way – and now want to show them faster and more publicly.

There was a lot of squawking and flapping when Lars von Trier’s new film Antichristdebuted at Cannes a few months ago.  I haven’t seen it, but apparently it assaulted the eyes with both genital mutilation and Willem Dafoe (a real one-two punch right there), thus earning it accolades as the Gross Art Movie of the Year.  But now it looks like Christmas came twice for perverts this year, because there’s a literally sick new movie on the block, and it is called Human Centipede.

Yesterday was Yom Kippur, considered the holiest day of the year for Jews. I have never been particularly religious, but fasting on Yom Kippur is something I’ve done since I was a kid. Not because my parents told me to or because it was expected of me, but because the significance of the day is something I’ve always inherently understood. Christians have confession periodically throughout the year, but in Judaism it’s an annual event. The 10 days between Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) and Yom Kippur are a period of self-reflection and repentance.
