Yesterday I had the privilege of presenting to the Texas A&M Chapter of the American Advertising Federation , thanks to my dear friend Andrew Haynes. I had a blast – I LOVE interacting with students – and I think they enjoyed it as well. Below is my presentation I gave – on me, what I do with my degree, and some tips on getting into web for interested students. Okay, okay. So this isn’t exactly an original thought. But I’m still a bit amazed at the lack of discretion demonstrated by people who mix their personal and professional brands in social media. It’s not the mixing of personal and professional that is the problem, though. The problem lies in doing it poorly and neglecting to recognize the consequences of unprofessional personal actions in an increasingly public information environment. Here are seven ways to make sure you ruin your chances of maintaining an image of professionalism online.

Last week, I met a new client who accepts that she needs to use the web much more effectively than she does now. Over the coming months, she’s planning to build her personal brand online, with the help of various promotions experts. Right now? “I just don’t have time for it,” she says. And when we discussed our next meeting, her suggested venue was her house — which is at least two hours’ travel time from mine. The size of the job simply doesn’t warrant me traveling for four hours for a meeting.
