When you hear something enough times, it may be a fad.  But when you start to see email spam about it, you know it’s a trend.  That’s the case with marketing trends such as email marketing and social media.  The problem with trends is that it’s usually a lagging indicator which means to seize the opportunity you may need to be an early adopters to reap the rewards.

There is no doubt that the world is in a re-boot, as I have said before, a ctl-alt-dlt on the hard disc of what works and what doesn’t. The experiences of 2009 have been quite shocking, news of Governments and Institutions that have not shown responsibility toward the power and influence they have on the economy and lives of individuals. For this reason alone, the opportunity for good citizens to build their own futures and become ’suppliers’ rather employees excites me.

I’ll admit upfront, I’m a big GaryVee fan.  When he announced his new book, Crush It , I ordered it no questions asked.  I knew that it would be that good.  Plus, I’ve mooched off of his unbelievable content for the past 2-years, it’s the least I can do for the guy. I first heard about Gary when he came to San Francisco and my friend JJ invited me to go see him do a live taping of WineLibrary.tv .  Of course, I was a dummy and turned down the offer.

I’m struggling to decide if I’m stereotypical of my generation, or if I really am special. I’m also struggling to decide if the “symptoms” of my generation are a problem, or if they’re a motivator for us to help ourselves lead more meaningful lives than the generations before us. I read an article called My job/career does not align with my true personal brand. [Generation Y and the mainstream workplace] passed along by my San Francisco-based DJ friend Phil .

I know there is a lot of career advice out there that suggests creating a cover letter that matches the job posting you are applying to as closely as possible. And while I agree with this in theory, the reality is that most job postings are useless and give very limited information about the position. Many are filled with fluff phrases stating that requirements include being a good communicator and a team player, and having a proven track record. Honestly, I’ve seen these phrases used on senior management and C-level postings.

In the past, getting the word out about an event, even if you only intended to invite your close circle of friends, meant a lot of work getting on the phone or emailing invitees individually, coordinating RSVPs, or even hanging up flyers.

This isn’t one of those “sky is falling” posts, but it is important for marketing and brand managers to be aware of the implications of the bit.ly custom name feature and how it can wreck havoc with your company’s (and personal) brand. Bit.ly is a popular shortening service that converts long URLs to a shortened, more palatable version for human consumption and also fits well with character-limited services such as Twitter.

Great article by CAREEREALISM-Approved Expert, Andy Robinson : “ Quality and Personal Excellence are two key elements of your Personal Brand. The degree to which you fully embrace the importance of these elements is   communicated to others on a continuous basis and is incorporated into others’ vision of who you are — i.e., the Personal Brand that you broadcast . More than starting hands that you dealt in a game there are other factors which must be taken into account at playing poker. If you remember that is described poker as card game, played with people - or anything on that score. It can not be over-estimated. More than cards which you hold, you must know the opponents, to be a successful player in poker.
