I’d like to share an update on a post I made over a year ago. Its about my on going saga of getting the word “Brian Wong” listed on Google’s search results for personal branding. In my previous post , I talked about how I got the number one spot on Google and then lost it when I screwed up the SEO on my pages when I switched to Wordpress and then got it back again after some tweaking. Hey, we all learn from mistakes right? Now I’m happy to report that my efforts have paid off.

The resume-preparation step comprises several sub-steps: Determine the focus of your resume. What kind of job or jobs will you be targeting? Your resume must target your desired career goal with precision. Job-seekers tend to forget that employers review resumes extremely quickly — often in just a few seconds. An employer taking such a quick glance should be able to immediately grasp what you want to do and have a sense of the value you can contribute to the organization.

LinkedIn has evolved into the largest online business networking platform – totaling 32 million users worldwide. Prior to the social networking craze, LinkedIn was largely used to connect with past co-workers and trusted colleagues. Now, however, LinkedIn has extended its capabilities to serve as a brand building platform for professionals looking to network, engage, and communicate with like-minded peers. The surge was accelerated during the recessionary period when laid off workers were looking to locate jobs and hopefully connect with others who could assist in the process.

I recently gave a talk at Golden Gate University titled Career Development & Job Search in a Social Media World. I talked about social network etiquette, the strategy behind building a network of professional associates, how to present one’s self online, and what recruiters are looking for, and what they hate. I’ve posted the slides, with notes, on SlideShare .

In a series of posts he covers why personal branding is so important ( The Google Background Check ), how to get started ( Personal Branding: Some Simple First Steps ), and what you’re trying to accomplish - that is, to show that you Consistently Contribute Value , as well as many other topics.

Alison Driscoll is an interactive copywriter and social media consultant who specializes in Facebook. She authors a blog at alisondriscoll.com . Facebook Pages may be taking the social network by storm, but they can take time and technical skill to set up. When you need to promote something quickly, or are looking to foster a stronger sense of community, the more traditional Facebook Group is often the way to go. While not as fancy as Pages, Groups offer many of the same features, with a slightly more streamlined look.

Michael Schulder CNN Senior Executive Producer Oh, did I have a close call this morning trying to stay germ free. I had just dropped off the kids at school and was driving to work when I sneezed. I have a cold. So, at the next red light, I grabbed the hand sanitizer that is always by my side these days, plopped some on my hands, and rubbed. I was still rubbing when the light turned green, which forced me to grab the wheel prematurely. As I tried to grip the steering wheel my hands began sliding all over the place.

You want Izeafest conference gossip? You’ve got it. One mouthy blogger opened the flood gates on the Screen Gems panel by making one snarky comment after another . Another rowdy blogger was caught ordering bottles of champagne, accepting numerous shots from CEO Ted Murphy and ending the night adorned in glowing necklaces. Oh shit. That was me.

If you haven’t been to a career fair lately, it’s time! Take advantage of these simple tips to make your attendance worth while: Tip #1: Get prepared by making a list of industries and employers in attendance at the event that are of interest. You don’t want to waste precious time at booths of employers with jobs unrelated to your search. Tip #2: Dress appropriately by dressing as you would for an interview. You’ll want to bring along a briefcase or writing portfolio so you can store your resumes and collect any brochures/contact information from various employer booths.

Credit: Jeff McNeill (via Flickr) If you work as a freelancer or other type of solopreneur where you market your products and services based on your name (rather than a company name), your name is your brand. What people think when they see or hear your name will influence whether or not they do business with you. That’s why independent professionals need to be aware of brand marketing as it applies not just to products or corporate images, but as it applies to them .

Artist Thaneeya McArdle My dialog with Thaneeya McArdle , a young artist who lives in Florida, USA, started when I typed “ funky abstract art” into Google Search. I was looking for images that would give me inspiration for my company presentation about funky brands . One of the images I liked very much led to the sites of Thaneeya McArdle: www.thaneeya.com and www.art-is-fun.com . I liked the way Thaneeya spoke about herself and her passion for art, as well as how she used the power of the Internet and social media to connect to those who appreciate her work.
