I talk to authors everyday through Lulu’s blog, Twitter account, Facebook, forums and email. You’re a passionate, driven group, and you should be. You create great work — powerful work that you put heart and soul into. You deserve access to a large audience, but getting noticed is often among the biggest challenges. One of the solutions to the issue of finding your audience is weRead. That’s the book discovery tool Lulu acquired last year that makes use of social networks to help authors find new readers and readers find new authors.

It’s easier to admit something to your computer screen than to a person’s face. The anonymous world out there behind the monitor can lead us to reveal much more about ourselves than we should. But how much is too much? As you might have guessed, the answer is “It depends.” Look at Penelope Trunk . She talks about abortion, sex, divorce, bulimia, mental wards and dating on her blog, even though its primary focus is careers. She also says her blog is about her.

Over the weekend, the Washington Post became the largest name in news to issue an all-points memo about acceptable use of social networking platforms, namely Twitter and Facebook. And though the paper did not make their guidelines public, Post ombudsman Andrew Alexander made the announcement via an  interpretation of the policy on his blog . Soon thereafter, paidContent ran the rules in their entirety , fueling an already raging firestorm against the policies on the web.

There is one thing I look for in a hire. It is non negotiable. I look for someone coachable. No matter how much skill they have, no matter how talented, no matter how much experience, no matter the industry experience, no matter how many years of successful quota attainment, if they aren’t coachable I don’t hire them. Coachable people recognize they have room to grow. Coachable people are more humble, secure and confident. The coachable look for alternative points of view.

Freelancing can be both fulfilling and exciting however in the midst of an economic recession it can also be extremely tough. So how can we increase leads, build credibility and establish ourselves in our chosen niche, all on a low budget? Step in blogging… Beyond the few bucks to buy a domain name the only real cost is our time. It can add long-term value to your business and brand, help you re-position your business and provide you with the base to become an authority in your niche.

I’ve been doing some reconnaissance reading about Twitter—why people use it and what they perceive its value to be. I am interested in what seems like an inherent paradox: Twitter is so widely and gleefully embraced as a tool for self-promotion ( boost your audience, boost your sales, build your personal brand ), and yet the prevailing wisdom on how to be an effective and popular Twitterer always seems to warn against being too . . . self-promotional.
