Trimming in Public is a series where I go through my list of 293 RSS feeds, 10 feeds at a time, give some detail as to why I subscribed to a particular feed, and then decide whether or not to keep on consuming that feed. In Episode 1 , I explained what RSS is and how to use it. Please read that if you need a refresher on why RSS is awesome and why you should be using it if you take reading news on the internet seriously.

It is no longer news that as a brand strategist and communicator I have uncommon passion with regards to how internet, social media can aid the advance of brand’s corporate bottomline and visibility. In the past years I have dedicated time to acquiring and making available relevant knowledge that can aid brand engagement whether online or offline. I have also applied those learnt principles to my personal brand as well as corporate brand. At a time I almost became bored with results I was getting.

In a recent post, I mentioned that I was struck by a quote from Mitch Joel, author of Six Pixels Of Separation in which he discussed the power of the personal brand within a corporate structure. “[I]t is not about how your business connects and communicates in online channels, it’s about how you (or your employees) as an individual build, nurture, and share personal brands.

I recently chastised the American Family Physician (the journal of the American Academy of Family Physicians) for assigning a high SORT (strength of evidence) rating to acupuncture treatments that did not merit that rating. While the AAFP claims to strongly support evidence-based medicine, I have observed a gradual infiltration of CAM into their journal, their website, and their CME offerings. They seem to be more concerned with the popularity of CAM and with not offending its believers than with maintaining scientific rigor.

A few weeks ago I posted a question on LinkedIn to see how creative people were using Twitter. Do You Have Any Unusual Ways to Use Twitter? I have been tweeting excerpts from my book for the last two weeks and am only through Chapter 3 so far. Many people seem to be retweeting my quotes, and some of these people now follow me, so I am pleased. How do you use this micro blog? Any great stories of Twitter use will be used in my blog on design and marketing, so please let me know if I can use your story and give me a link to your Twitter account and / or blog if applicable, so I can link to you from my blog.

Some ideas are just too profitable to go away – and the Wow Green compensation plan certainly demonstrates that. This plan involves talking all the people you can into selling the same things you’re selling, just like all the old programs from the 1970’s. That’s right: the Wow Green compensation plan is about creating your own competition, and making your job even more difficult. Let’s not ask why exactly you would want to do that; let’s ask, instead, the underlying question: why does the Wow Green compensation plan want you to do that? It’s not hard to understand, when you really think about it.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know about the Wow Green business opportunity people are jumping around trying to follow. It’s all about saving the planet; we can’t use the cleaners we used to use anymore, we have to use something that doesn’t damage the Earth. Once you get started in your own Wow Green business, you can sell these cleaners yourself. You get to put those cleaners on your web site, collecting a percentage commission whenever someone orders them from you.

In a recent post, Zee, Editor of The Next Web, cautions against using third party, Twitter media sharing services due to the potential risks of loss of control over your personal branding. His overall message is important: find and use a platform that you can own and control your media as hosted. However, what Zee intones can largely be seen as true, it overlooks and discounts the disposable behavioral dispositions for many people who actually “choose” to post multi media they consider disposable, ephemeral, and of the moment: “pop.”Come on, Zee.

Now that BusinessWeek is on sale and my future here is uncertain, I’m cross-posting more than ever on my book blog . The way I see it, BW is the ship my colleagues and I are on. Our blogs and social networks are skiffs and rowboats we’re busy building. Most of us, I’m betting, will spend the rest of our careers with at least one foot outside the mother ship–whichever company it may be. To subordinate our blogs and updates to the editorial dictates of our employer would work against our interests.

Why on Earth is Warren Buffett so successful? This marks week 8 of my 10-week series “The Matt Crowe Profile Series”. I have been contemplating about continuing on indefinitely since not only do I really enjoy profiling people, but also is a way for me to simplify the key concepts and messages about these individuals for my readers to be able to learn from as well. Warren Buffett was born August 30, 1930. He is one of the most successful investors in history and C.E.O. of his company Berkshire Hathaway .

Don’t you think it is just so cute when people use prepositions in a cute, yet totally grammatically wrong way in their titles? I do. I think I am so cute, clever and also can I just say title creation stresses me out. Or should I put a ? at the end of that sentence? Puncutaion is also a bit “strsssy”. But I digress. Before I get to the laughter… I want to tell you about the mon a ey. I want to tell you about an opportunity for you to win $100 because I am awesome like that. O.K.

As much as you think blogging and social networking are mainstream, corporate America has not caught up quite yet. Many companies are fearful that they are losing control of their brand — and they are. Companies are trying to put together social media guidelines as quickly as possible, so that employees know what they can and cannot say online, concerning their brand. You’ve probably seen a blog with a disclaimer and blown it off like it didn’t exist and I don’t blame you. Everything you say and do, whether online of offline, is a reflection of your brand and all brands you’re associated with, such as a nonprofit you are volunteering for, your company and even your friends.
