David Pogue took some heat on last week’s This Week in Tech (TWiT) with Leo Laporte and John C. Dvorak (the generally out-of-touch-but-entertaining-anyway crankmaster himself) over being actually bubbly and happy about some of the good products he’s reviewed. When he finds a good product, he’ll laud it with praise, and when he finds a bad one he actually offers constructive criticism about the product.

This blogging and social media thing is easy, right? Set yourself up with a free blog, have something you want to post about and off you go. Tweet about it, hook into Facebook and you’re flying. As easy as baking candy. Whether you’re blogging about your career, your relationships or your candy-baking business, what most bloggers come up against sooner or later is how much “them” they put into their blog and their social media presence, and what they choose to hold back.

Utah Congressman Jason “Mr. Publicity” Chaffetz thinks he’s pretty hot on social media . He might be surprised to hear that he’s ranked only No. 8 among Congress guys with “Twitter Klout.” No. 1 is none other than the excitable Rep. Joe ” U lie!!!! ” Wilson. Wilson hired a professional tweeter—which seems to negate the whole purpose of social media— to become a Twitter “persona,” defined as: You have built a personal brand around your identity.. . . when you talk people listen.

In the spirit of taking action, I intend to try a lot of new things in the next year. Without fail some of them are going to crash and burn. Hopefully others will prove useful and provide solid value for the people that participate, consume, interact with, etc. One such idea is something that I’ve had on my mind for quite some time now. I’ve witnessed people do some great (see: charitable) things with social media. David Armano helping Daniela and her family comes to mind, Chris Brogan encouraging his community to help out one charity a month, and many, many more.
