Google’s brand value rose 25% to $31.9bn (£19.5bn) from the year before according to Interbrand’s survey of global brands, the year’s biggest rise. This is the first time that the total value of the world’s top 100 brands – down 4.6% at $1.15 trillion – fell. The world’s two most valuable brands remained Coca Cola and IBM.

Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates.Powered by WP Greet BoxAs I was prepping to interview someone a while back it dawned on my how powerful social media is as a research tool. With more and more people and companies connecting to social media everyday, it’s creating a whole new level of transparency. This past Tuesday marked the end of the 2009 Techcrunch 50 event, which took place this year at the San Francisco Design Center Concourse. While startup companies introduced their product to venture capitalists, journalists, a panel of “expert” judges, and the tech community, Los Angeles Times Technology Editor Dan Fost couldn’t help but notice the shortage of women represented at the event, and although not mentioned, I’m sure the same could be said for other underrepresented minorities.

My daughter Jennifer and I just spent our joint birthday celebrations at the Resort of the Brand of Brands…Disney. Some people may accuse me of picking Disney to visit as a way of writing off the trip since I was both “working by studying brands”, and at the same time having good fun watching the fireworks display while toasting our joint birthdays. No one said you couldn’t enjoy your work and I always do my best to put work and play together whenever possible.

Mom was right about minding your manners. Although behaving appropriately and properly seems to be lost these days, it is still the best way to behave, especially if you care about your personal brand and personal marketing. This evening I was at an event about social media. Lots of people were tweeting and in this context that is acceptable behavior. However, lots of people, especially a very obnoxious man behind me, were chit-chatting during the panel presentation. This is not acceptable.

Brands from McDonalds to Google have all claimed headspace in the minds of their spectators, so why can’t you? Dear Mr. Great One, I hesitate writing this note for only one reason. It’s not because I question my logic, nor do I question motives. No, the single reason I hesitate to write this letter is because you are who you are. If it was anyone else, I would have written this a few months ago. Hell, I may have written this a few YEARS ago—but you are who you are. Your accomplishments and class have earned you a certain degree of latitude in any decision that you make. So please don’t think that I take this lightly.
