Image by eqqman via FlickrSo, I’m browsing my Facebook news feed when I see a link from one of my favorite observers in the social media space, Mitch Joel, to a post on his blog about the narcissism of social media. At the bottom of this, he points to a Mashable (tagline: “The Social Media Guide”) story about a new study from San Diego State University showing that Generation Y students think their counterparts use social media for narcissistic purposes, yet agree this self-promotion and personal

I cried during my birthday. I mean, don’t get me wrong… My wife Laura planned a heck of a celebration, and it was a fun day. Still, it was bittersweet. Maybe it was the realization that life isn’t as easy as we like it to be, or reflecting back on the ups and downs of the year that was. Maybe it was just the built-up toll of a year’s worth of hard lessons. Maybe I’m just a drama queen. But these are 28 valuable lessons on marketing, entrepreneurship, social media and copy that I learned over the past 1 year.

Wow, I can’t believe summer is over and tomorrow is September 1! It’s been an incredibly busy summer here at Morningstar. We’ve redesigned our website. Launched three marketing coaching programs , and now I’m happy to announce our first three products. Each include an audio lecture, a transcript and a workbook. 1) Business Planning Workshop – This program is designed to help you break through the mental blocks that may be holding you back and give you a step-by-step blueprint for getting from where you are now to where you want to be.

If you’ve come to the site over the last few days, you might have noticed a new design. I think it’s a bit cleaner and easier to navigate than the older version, and a lot closer to our main company site, Morningstar Multimedia . That said, I’ve noticed (and fixed) a couple of bugs today, so if you find anything else out of place, please let me know (either by posting a comment or emailing me through the contact form .) I’ve also just launched two new strategic marketing products – just in time for September! (Summer flew by fast, didn’t it?) These are audio programs with a transcript and workbook.

Grim yet compelling This novel caused something of a stir when it won the booker prize in 1994 with one of the judges, Rabbi Julia Neuberger saying “Frankly, it’s crap.” It is not. How Late it Was, How Late is a wonderfully written and finely crafted piece of work. The novel is a stream of conscious narrative about a small time crook called Sammy, who wakes up after being arrested and assaulted by police officers to find that he is blind. We follow Sammy as he struggles to deal with his new condition and put his life back together.

Twitter is a wildly popular microblogging service. It involves writing Tweets, which are short updates of a maximum of 140 characters that tell your followers what you are up to. Although your Tweets are technically supposed to answer the question, “What are you doing?” Twitter has moved far beyond that. Tweets are used to share stories, link to photos, promote content, break news, and a whole lot more. Twitter has also become an incredibly important tool for social media marketing professionals. Here are 12 ways in which Twitter can be used in your social media marketing campaign.

As Labor Day approaches, I had to share this latest post from The Bing Blog – Do you like your job? If you’ve ever worked, you’ve pondered this question. I don’t believe that anyone likes his or her job 100% of the time. As a mid-career Boomer, I’m not doing what I thought I’d be doing when I entered college 35 years ago with plans to save the world. Despite the copious advice available regarding the importance of following your passions, leveraging your strengths, and crafting your personal brand, employment nirvana is elusive.

Do you know anyone that you’d call a “Go-Getter?” Yeah, that guy/gal that always seems to be working on getting results at virtually any cost? Sure, I know ‘em quite well. I know, because I have always been one… A “do-er,” as one employer labeled me. I wore it like a badge of honor, holding my head high as if I’d been knighted by the Queen. That’s all I knew. That’s how I defined my work days and eventually, my personal brand. But it always seemed to take so much effort. So much time. And “getting” rarely received equal return , let alone a satisfactory profit.

A few weeks ago I had the privilege to speak at the Triangle Chapter of the American Marketing Association luncheon with with Jim Tobin and Chuck Hester on Building Your Personal Brand Through Social Media. I only had about 5 minutes for an intro conversation on the topic before we went into a panel discussion and Q&A. Below are my keynote slides and notes. Jeff Vail is starting his long-awaited series on the next step for our post-meltdown political economies (see ToC for full project description): An excerpt on how this change may come about in the core country of the present system. Jeff Vail: “The diagonal economy might rise amidst the decline of our current system—the “Legacy System.” Using America as an example (but certainly translatable to other regions and cultures), more and more people will gradually realize that there the “plausible promise” once offered by the American nation-state is no longer plausible.

Ssshhhh! My business roots are in product development. To make irresistible product, you have to be close to the people who buy and use what you’re making. To be close to anyone, you have to listen to what they’re saying. Social media starts, moves, and fully connects through listening. Listening is marketing. It connects us to customers, clients, readers, critics, innovators, and folks we meet for the first time. It takes an open mind to listen and an open heart to hear.

In the spirit of social media, I asked my tweeps for their advice on using social media for business. I’m teaching a course, Using Social Media for Business , starting Tuesday evening at Kirkwood Community College. I think you can still register for the course. I know a lot about using social media for journalism and I’ve learned a fair amount about using social media for business as well. But I knew the people I follow on Twitter would know way more than I do.

Author: Michelle Dumas Do you Tweet? If not, maybe you should. Perhaps it would be misleading to say that as a job searcher you MUST be on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, or other social and business networking sites. But, assuming that you use social media in appropriate and professional ways, being connected and networking in these ways can only help. And, few people would argue that you shouldn’t seize on any edge that you can give yourself in a job market that is widely being called the most competitive in a quarter-century.

What Makes the Ugg Bailey Button Boot Such a Hit?

It's simple. UGG Australia has morphed together their two most popular styles. They started with the ever-popular UGG Classic Short Boot and then added a Wooden Button from their best-selling, as seen on Oprah, UGG Cardy. Put them together and you get this year's must have UGG style – the Ugg Bailey Button.
The Bailey Button is available in 5 colors including Black, Chestnut, Grey, Chocolate and Sand. California-based retailer Footwear etc. has received all 5 colors into stock at their 7 stores and is already seeing positive results. Footwear etc. Manager, Andrew Monarch, said "It is not a matter of IF the Bailey sells out, but how quickly. We highly recommend that our customers secure their boots early before it's too late."
Right, it is not a matter of IF the Bailey sells out, but how quickly. So we highly recommend that our customers secure their pair early before it's too late.
The UGG Bailey Button is also very versatile as it can be worn up or folded down for a different look. They feature a soft foam insole and a genuine sheepskin lining. If you haven't experience the comfort of authentic UGG Australia Boots yet then your feet have been missing out. Give the new UGG Bailey Button a try today or if it's not for you, there's always the popular classic styles including UGG Classic Short, UGG Classic Tall and UGG Classic Cardy.
But remember… don't wait to get your UGGs. Every year people procrastinate and then they can't find the UGG Boots they want. UGG Sale–Shop early for the best selection. The closer to Christmas you get the harder it gets to find UGGs.
