There are many ways by which you can build your personal brand online. One of the most popular ways is through the use of social media. This is because social media serves as an effective way to manage the reputation of online brands. Because all the content and comments on most blogs and online articles are open to the public, most online entrepreneurs find that social media serves as a great tool to keep them updated on what is being said about their products and their brands in the market place and also gives them the opportunity to counter it.

Regular readers of this blog know I’m a bit obsessive about testing and measuring small, iterative improvements to my website.  Previously I used Google Website Optimizer but I found it had some annoying limitations.  In particular, it was too much work to start tests, too much work to code tests, and too much work to maintain expired URLs after tests were over.  So I went away to the code salt mines for the last week, and coded my own A/B testing framework in Ruby on Rails.  It is called

A writer will tell you that when he’s too close to his documents, he doesn’t even see the spelling mistakes anymore. Like that writer, it would seem we’re too close to our event to realize that not everyone knows what a PodCamp actually is. I was speaking with someone yesterday who was sure that it was only for podcasters. Ooops! Good news: it’s not. Inspired by the BarCamp movement, a podcamp is an open social media conference that focuses on blogging, microblogging, podcasting, vidcasting, wikis and other social networks.

You may have followed all the “right” advice on resume writing, and added industry keywords, certifications, toolsets, and the like. However, if you’re not being called for interviews, you may want to consider tapping into the power of soft skills to demonstrate your brand on your resume. After all, most employers may state that they’re looking for certain core competencies and skills, but what they REALLY hire are personalities and work styles–which are exemplified by your brand.

These days, content seems to be king. But in order to get the eyes you desire, it seems that you have to provide lots of free content first. I like to explain to my clients who wish to market themselves that they have to prove their value to their market-base. Look at it this way: it’s the same as applying for a job. If you are looking for work, you have to present a resume that proves that you have the education, the experience and the skills to do the work. Social media and the Webscape works the same way.

This week I was in Houston as many of you know who follow me on Twitter know. I was taking part in the 2009 Marketing in The Oilfield Conference . My panel was Leverging Social Media. It was a great event and I had a really nice time. As I networked and meet interesting people, I started to notice something about the folks there. There were lots of comments like: -I’m here to learn about Social Media -I really don’t understand this stuff, but I am here to learn -We are here to get more clients -I am here to learn about brand management.

Twilight: I can’t say I’m a convert, but I actually enjoyed this movie. The sexual tension between Bella and Edward is constantly on the brink of exploding, making for an extremely engaging movie. Downsides –> heavy handed 80s music (are you KIDDING?) –> Kristin Stewart : a) Sounds like a man b) is incredibly smug –> Robert Pattinson ’s pouty lips and lusty close-ups –> the questionable writing. eg. “Your scent, it’s like a drug to me.

Well, Steam Whistle beer has this saying: Do One Thing Really, Really Well . If you think about it, doing one thing really, really well, is a huge part of building a brand because that one thing becomes a central point for your brand’s story . And that one thing is just as important for a personal brand as it is a corporate one.

Personal branding is getting a lot more attention today than it used to. That\’s mostly because there are so many people on the Internet today, and they all have products and services that are for sale. If you don\’t compete with them in a meaningful way they\’ll mostly leave you in the dust, and that\’s not something that you want to see happen.

There’s a great article up at the MediaShift blog about student newspapers and online publishing. According to one recent study, more than a third of college papers are still print-only. The MediaShift post looks at why that is, what the barriers to publishing online are, and why it’s so important to make the effort. The whole thing is worth reading, but here are a few excerpts: Make no mistake, college news is a messy business. Students are learning, and their mistakes all too often show up in print.

By Carole Martin If you have been reading articles or listening to news reports about the job market, you are aware that you are in a tough job market and that you will have to do something to make yourself stand out from the rest of the crowd. You realize that you are competing against the odds. The question is, “How can you make yourself stand out when there are so many other candidates looking at the same job?” The answer is to “BRAND YOURSELF.” What this means is you have to discover WHAT MAKES YOU UNIQUE.

What is a Mommy Blogger? Am I one? Do I want to be one? These thoughts have been racing through my head as I have read various media reports and blog posts leading up to and following BlogHer 09. When a lot of bloggers I know see the mainstream media talking about mommy bloggers, they want to scream or do scream: “BUT THAT IS NOT US!” . Some react by rejecting the term and saying that they are not a mommy blogger and others see a need to correct misinformation, to remove the negative connotations, and to reclaim the label .

Today, 13 August, is the anniversary of the day Mickey Mantle died. That got me thinking about what this sport legend’s brand is, and how we can all take some personal branding lessons from this baseball great. Mantle, although dead for over a decade, still holds the records for the most World Series home runs (18), RBIs (40), runs (42), walks (43), extra-base hits (26), and total bases(123). WOW! That’s some record! So, taking a page out of Mickey’s playbook, how are your hitting home runs for your personal brand? Do You Have a World Series Personal Brand? 1.

by C.G. Lynch January 12, 2009 — As the economy falls deeper into recession, many people have turned to LinkedIn , the social network for professionals, to job hunt and connect with contacts who might help them land a new gig. Today is sort of a rant. Sometimes I just can’t take it anymore and I have to let off some steam. Because I spend a stupid amount of time on the internet, combine that with some Adult A.D.D. (loss of focus) and I see things on the internet that I consider downright stupid. I’m no genius either, if I were, I’d have figured out how to blog from the beaches on the French Riviera. As it is, I’m sitting here in my office at home no where near as successful as those I’m getting ready to rant about.

By Nathan Hangen , follow him @nhangen . I know, it sounds strange in theory. But think about it like this: you spend a lot of time building a network on Twitter, engaging with your followers, and creating powerful partnerships, but what would happen if this single asset went belly up? You don’t put all of your cash into a single stock, so why should you invest all of your social capital in a single service? Don’t get me wrong, I like Twitter, but I want to be prepared in the event that something kills my favorite social tool.

One of the great features of LinkedIn is the recommendations feature, whereby you can share recommendations for your connections, and they can write about how fantastic you are in return. The limitation of the feature is that they have to write the recommendation and submit it in LinkedIn.  This adds credibility to the information, as it must come from a third party, but restricts what sort of references and testimonials you can add.

It’s always funny when people think I’m so cock-sure (ha!) that I never need reassurance. It means my Personal Brand is doing what it’s supposed to. Unfortunately, no man is an island – not even me. I get plenty of encouragement and positive reinforcement: I’ve got Guile (old friend), Mary (best friend), Chief (running buddy, soon-to-be motorcycle buddy), Ryan Jones (long-distance friend, who I owe a visit) and others who I think the world of and I prop myself up on them when I’m feeling tired, insecure or wobble in my resolve to live the life I have dedicated this blog to.

“Who’s Paul Silverman?” The sudden death two days ago of my former partner Paul Silverman, 69, inspired a number of conversations around the office about life and careers.  Paul was unarguably one of advertising’s best copywriters, a brilliant strategist, and someone who helped put Mullen on the map. “Get me Paul Silverman?” In his time crafting ads, winning awards and helping grow an agency, Paul was pretty well known.  He didn’t really work at it, but certainly enjoyed the recognition.

Job-seeking in this 21st century recession may just have gone viral and mobile. Since the start of the recession in December 2007, about 6.7 million workers have been laid off according to latest statistics — at a time the popularity of social networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter have exploded, drawing millions of users per day. As these sites continue to alter social and cultural landscapes, they are also transforming the job search process, enabling more and more people to connect with potential employers, promote their own skills, set up support groups and search for job leads and contacts.

A great explanation from PBS’s MediaShift blog about why some universities are hesitant to allow student-run newspapers publish on the web , and at what cost. …college news is a messy business. Students are learning, and their mistakes all too often show up in print. An online presence will broadcast those mistakes to the world, so the theory goes. Also, a college that supports student press freedoms when distributed to 2,000 people on campus might not be so keen to distribute “bad news” about the campus when the whole world is watching.

Of all the posts I’ve written, I think the cheesiest was “Family-Rich” . Complete garbage. I didn’t even succeed in convincing myself that having a lot of family makes me rich. It was a lame attempt to hide my struggle with the feeling of not belonging. That became a conscious thought last weekend when Grandma Betty invited me up for an impromptu Charbonnet family reunion. Some newly discovered cousins had flown up from Louisiana and wanted to meet the California side of the family.

Many times people who are new to Twitter tell me that they are confused about what Twitter is and how it can help them. First, Twitter is a microblogging platform that allows you to send out 140 character long messages (tweets). All the big stars from Oprah to Ashton Kutcher are using Twitter, so why would associations want to use Twitter? Here are 5 reasons: 1. Help members find you! By having a Twitter account with your name, you’re letting Google know you exist! Anytime your associations name on the web, you need to take that opportunity (create GoogleJuice as @JeffJarvis would say).

Facebook allows users to define themselves through its smorgasbord of applications and features: personal photos, virtual gifts and status updates all lend a hand in users efforts to open up and share just about anything going on in their lives. Younger generations, of particularly my own, have come under the Facebook spell and have a tendency to share a huge amount of personal information on sites like Facebook in an effort to open up and connect to the outside world without taking the time to protect themselves.

Summer’s almost over and college newspapers across the country will be cranking up to full speed soon. Likely, they’ll be getting ready for further adventures in online journalism, expanding their online presence while attempting to keep the print product financially successful. But hard as it is to believe, there are still student newspapers around the country that have no online presence at all. At the Associated Collegiate Press Summer Workshops recently, I asked for a show of hands from students whose newspapers didn’t have websites.

MLM companies do not sell their products through retail channels like supermarkets but through independent distributors. The message of the company’s products is shared through the age old channel of word of mouth. The independent distributors are the company’s sales force which is responsible to sell products as well as recruit more people to join the sales force. The company saves costs in employee salary and advertising on television and print but shares those saving with its sales team in the form of discounts and commissions.

Online PR in the form of website and ezine article placement can be a great way to build your personal brand. You showcase your expertise in the article and raise your status. You get an author’s box at the end of the article containing a bio, as well as email and website contact information. Readers may click-through on your URL to learn more about you. More links improve your search engine rankings. The benefits go on.

Just because your business is online, and an Ecommerce business does not mean you are not going to have to pay attention to the fundamentals of all businesses on or off line. Many small business people and entrepreneurs wish to start their own e-commerce business, and since it is not very well regulated, we find that these new market entrants often take the easy way out, and they don’t think much about integrity or ethics when running their companies.

I normally go all bright for summertime knitting, but here’s a little taste of Christmas! It’s the uber-fabulous Cotty pattern in STR in The Cookie Next Door colorway. Dontcha wanna reach out and take a bite? (I mean that in a good, you’re-my-own-personal-brand-of-heroin kind of way) . And check it out, my first picot sock cuff! Only for you, Carrie. :) As written, you cast on normally and pick up stitches to finish off the pretty little picot.

Way, way back in 2003, I was a junior at Gonzaga University . At the time, Facebook was a brand new way to communicate about parties and events, to see pictures of the parties you couldn’t make it to (or couldn’t remember). It was a way to keep up with your friends from other schools. Facebook was our own safe little network where we shared our college antics, thoughts and other information with peers.

As I look back on the posts that have connected most with my readers it is often posts in which I’ve shared something of my own personal story and experience that seem to draw readers into a deeper engagement. Sometimes it’s not what you write but who you are and the stories that you tell that seem to make content compelling. Many readers don’t just want information – they want an emotional connection and they want to know that someone real is on the other end of what they’re writing.

Be Your Own Brand A Breakthrough Formula for Standing Out from the Crowd Brands are typically associated with products and businesses, but David McNally and Karl Speak suggest the same concept can be applied to individuals and relationships, with powerful results. Be Your Own Brand shows how personal branding, like product branding, creates a special type of relationship fueled by a strong belief system and tied to an emotional connection.

Remember that people judge you by what they see, hear and sense. In the first 30 seconds, the time it will take you to make your elevator pitch, people will form opinions about your economic level, your trustworthiness, your social position, your level of sophistication, social background, your success in present and current endeavors, your character, your future and decide if they like you. Those are some pretty stout decisions to make in 30 seconds or less.

For all our talk of freedom, we Americans LOVE rules… Our favorite sport, football, has the most rules of any sport on the planet. Poker players make up new rules with every hand (”threes and hearts are wild except for the Queen, which you can pass to the right if someone sneezes during play”). Our institutionalized belief systems — whether Rastafarianism, environmentalism, or even Libertarianism — bristle with rules of what can and can’t be done.

DigiDave (Dave Cohn) is a living example of this — and naturally, he has written a blog post about the topic. Ryan Sholin cautions us to be authentic in this pursuit — an honest brand is valuable; a fake or inflated brand is detrimental. Greg Linch supplied those last two links in a comment on Joe’s blog post. (See Greg on Twitter .) Lauren Michell Rabaino is a journalism student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and her online portfolio exemplifies many of these points.

The list of Twitter Analytics tools continues to grow. These third-party applications let you gauge your activity, followers, friends, and other parameters on the social networking site. I’ve discussed Twitterholic and Twitter Grader previously, but the most interesting ones are those that tell you what you want to hear. For me, that has to be Klout . Register with Klout, allow it to access your Twitter account via OAth trusted login rather than giving it your password and within an hour or so (at busy times) it will email you when it has created a personal profile for your account.

Well, your personal brand is the way people perceive, think, and feel about you in relation to others. The people you work with already have perceptions, thoughts, and feelings about you, so just by virtue of being “you” in the workplace, you already have a personal brand.   The question is whether you have the personal brand you want.

That means that dogs, like their terrible-two human counterparts, can learn between 160 and 250 words AND do simple math! Not bad for a creature who licks himself, carries fleas, sucks fur-balls, and drools after eating. It got me thinking about canin e attributes and human brand traits.

It never ceases to amaze me how rude some people can seem in various forms of communication. My mother taught me to smile when talking on the phone, that the act of smiling will come across in my voice, making me sound like the ray of sunshine I am. However, nothing rains on my party more than a “debbie downer” on the phone. If I am supposed to be helping you, it would behoove you to be pleasant, thus making me want to help you even more – right? What is even more perplexing is how some people can sound like angels on the phone, and then you get an email from them that must have been sent from their evil twin locked in the basement.

Attitude is the foundation of personal branding. If you do no have right attitude you cannot fake it. No one can solid in any building project without a sold foundation. I recently ran across an interesting new service in the “personal branding” space. It’s been called “Twitter meets LinkedIn,” and it has the potential to change the way candidates promote themselves, and the way organizations recognize great work. The site is called MeritBuilder , and it is a place for people to collect all of their personal recommendations, praise, and accolades in one place. The site has a feel-good vibe — appropriate to a service focused on appreciation and recognition.

As a professional photographer, a power portfolio is a basic necessity for you. A portfolio is the best avenue for showcasing your sample works and contact information. This also serves as a reflection of your personal brand. Clients base their decision on your sample works, because these are proofs of your skills and expertise. Your portfolio should look presentable inside and out in order to project a good image to clients and eventually close a business deal.

There’s this marketer friend of mine, I won’t mention his name other than he became an online millionaire in 2 years, literally starting with nothing except a broken down old PC. When he first started out he believed website design was important and spent lots of time and money on creating great looking websites. His sales were nothing to write home about, he was just about getting by. But then he realized something… website design was a complete waste of time and money so decided to remove all the graphics from his websites.

(Galatians 6:12)  “As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ.” Legalists put continuous pressure on the grace-loving people in Galatia.  The Greek word for “constrain” in this verse is in the Present Active tense, which means it was happening even as Paul wrote this letter.  But the pressure wasn’t because the legalists wanted righteousness.  They were pressuring their brothers and sisters because they wanted to look good to the religious establishment.  They were not interested in spiritual growth.

Helping job seekers with good advice is important to Rich, as it is to me, and I enjoyed visiting Rich’s blog. Rich just posted on a topic that was on my on-deck circle: job candidates “thinking outside the box” to gain attention . There are indeed many job seekers are definitely acting “outside the box”…but I’m not so sure these folks were “thinking.” The Boston Globe

Think of this as our monthly “open mike” thread for our bloggers.  We’ll share our projects, passions, family photos, and the little trials and triumphs of our lives. This is your chance to get to know us outside of our personal finance personas.  This is also a good time to offer bribes, marriage proposals, and free beer.

Lately I’ve been thinking about the differences between personal and organization marketing. My personal philosophy is that personal brand marketing should be ubiquitous while organizational brand marketing should be focused and localized. For a personal brand, I believe that is important to be in as many places online as possible. While the number of outlets that you have to manage may make this a time-consuming process, it should be relatively easy to control your brand message across chanels.

Music Critic Michael Steinberg I first talked to Michael Steinberg on stage.  The work was Schoenberg’s massive “Gurrelieder”.   I was singing the part of the Bauer, and he was taking the part of Klaus Narr, a kind of prophetic village idiot.  The role is written in Sprechstimme, halfway between speaking and singing.  Michael’s German, remembered from childhood, always had a kind of English tinge to it, and he was an elfin presence anyway.  I remember particularly the physical way he intoned the last lines:  “Erwacht, Erwacht, ihr Blumen zur Wonne” with all his might and main, his small body shaking.  Michael had a child’s kind of wonder.

In its study, E-Consultancy found that, along with natural search (SEO), email continues to be one of the most popular methods of generating sales on the web, with 74% of companies using it regularly. Whilst other budgets are suffering in the recession (e.g. 12% drop in the use of paid search in the last year), email’s cost effectiveness has secured its position as the ever reliable workhorse of digital marketing.

Social Media reminds me of the movie “I Robot” in which humans created an artificial machine that while at first is useful, eventually rages war against humanity. Social media has the opportunity to be a very powerful AND positive tool. At the same time, it can do horrifying damage. I consider myself tech savy. I’m up-to-speed (or at least getting close) with the social networking/media arena. But while recently setting up my new computer at work, I discovered something I had never seen connected with my Microsoft Outlook.

THE Chris Brogan had just finished speaking at a panel with Ben Huh and Micah Baldwin that was moderated by Sean Percival .  I tried to catch him after the panel, but was unfortunately beat to the punch by at least 5 other people who got to Chris first.  It was like when you see a hot girl at a lounge or bar , she’s never standing by herself because she’s always surrounded by guys trying to get her digits.  That’s how this felt right now, except these people wanted the business card in Chris’ pocket.

Catching up on yesterday’s reading, a couple items about blogging caught my eye. First from Blogger Interrupted , on how blog traffic is down in general: What does this mean? The economy certainly has something to do with this – a dirty little secret of blog reading is that most people read blogs at work. Less people are at work in front of a computer, and those who do have jobs where they can read blogs are being very careful about giving their employer a reason to can them, and are working harder, with less time to fritter away on blog reading.

It is no mistake that I chose the phrase “Designing a New Culture” for my slogan. I believe that interactive design form is changing not only how we communicate, but how we think.  Ultimately design changes society at a very deep level. I think that designers need to step up to the challenge and take on the responsibility that this change represents. One of art’s effects is that it can initiate change in the viewer. Design reaches this capability in the reach of the media and the attention of the viewer.

In personal branding there are two types of style. One is the kind which has little meaning. If you’ve ever heard someone refer to personal branding as “style over substance” that person is thinking of this: a signature haircut, a catch phrase or a special hat. If your personal brand relies on the shape of your eye glasses, you’re in trouble. Chances are there’s not much going on with your dishes either.

Sometimes I don’t completely get advertising. Take McDonald’s for example. How many people in the US have never heard of McDonald’s? Not many. So what’s the point in advertising? Maybe you can convince some more people to come in to buy off of the Dollar Menu or get more kids to beg their parents to buy them a happy meal, but it seems like McDonald’s would be just fine without any advertising at all. That’s something that the folks at Dallas’ Moroch will disagree with strongly because they are an ad agency that happens to do a lot of work with McDonald’s.

At last week’s ABA meeting, I attended an interesting business development program titled Making Rain in a Drought .  Although the presenter had generated a full presentation with PowerPoint slides, the audience began asking questions fairly quickly and their questions became the focus of the program. One question struck me particularly.  A woman stood and asked why the focus of business development is so thoroughly on the individual lawyer, when firms are (she asserted) moving toward a team-based model in which a client “belongs” to the firm rather than to a single lawyer who created and nurtures the relationship.

Every other Sunday, The Simple Dollar reviews a career, entrepreneurship, personal productivity, or personal development book. Perhaps it’s just my perspective, but there seem to be a lot of books out there right now that seem to encourage people to make a radical change in their careers. I think these books all come from a general sense of dissatisfaction with the old style of career path, where you give your loyalty to an organization in exchange for some degree of safety.

Jim Knutsen claims “there is literally nothing left to say on branding. With all those words, you’d think the discipline would be clearly defined and understood. And yet there is still massive confusion. I’ve had a hundred conversations that center around client questions like, “What’s the difference between positioning and branding? Is this my business strategy or my brand strategy? Is my brand promise the same thing as my elevator pitch?” “Nearly every brand consultancy answers those questions with their own ‘proprietary’ version of a branding model,” Knutsen notes.

I have really enjoyed getting to know Lori Nordstrom through this Coffee Break.  Lori was so excited to participate, and I really appreciate that!  It is always fascinating for me to learn more about a successful photographer, find out who they are and why they do what they do.  Lori’s photography mantra –”celebrating real life in photography”–truly seems to reflect who she is as a person.   Lori celebrates life with a passion!

EYE WEEKLY — Welcome to Your Quarterlife Crisis   ‘Unrelenting indecision, isolation, confusion and anxiety about working, relationships and direction is reported by people in their mid-twenties to early thirties who are usually urban, middleclass and well-educated; those who should be able to capitalize on their youth, unparalleled freedom and free-for-all individuation. They can’t make any decisions, because they don’t know what they want, and they don’t know what they want because they don’t know who they are, and they don’t know who they are because they’re allowed to be anyone they want.

Sooooo, my company eliminated my position. I have been downsized, laid off, sent packing. I suppose documentation becomes less of an issue in trying economic times and when your industry is doing things like showing up at the dock with a whale impaled on the front of the ship . I tried to keep a diary of my first 24 hours of unemployment, although the whole thing can pretty much be summed up with two entries: 3:05pm Cracking a beer, sitting in the sun in the living room.

Over the years, Anne Heche has spoken out against her mother Nancy’s work as a pro-”ex-gay” Focus on the Family employee . But now, in an Alex Witchel-penned New York Times Magazine article, Anne gives the most frank and revelatory commentary on the subject to date. Here’s a snip: Heche said that when she called her mother — during her seventh year in therapy — to confront her about [her father's sexual abuse], her mother ended the conversation by saying, “Jesus loves you, Anne,” before hanging up.

The App The App starts today and runs for the entirety of August.

Journalists are news companies’ most valuable assets. That’s what Mike Arrington asserts , and I think he’s right (disregard the “failing old media” rhetoric): And earlier today I got a glimpse at what AOL is up to – they are hiring all the journalists being fired and laid off by the newspapers and magazines. And they now have a news room 1,500 journalists and editors strong . Amazingly, failing old media is throwing away their most valuable assets . And AOL is eagerly picking those assets up for a song.
