I recently read a poll about why people use twitter . It was very interesting seeing the reasons people gave and I’d like to share my thoughts on why you should, too. You be laughing to yourself if you already do tweet, but you’d be surprised at how many don’t. Network with other programmers I’ve said before that networking is one of the best things you can do for your career. Not only can networking help you find a job, but I’ve found that programmers are generally very helpful and accessible on twitter.

When I first heard about Twitter, I thought it was pretty stupid. I didn’t care to read the banalities of someone’s Tweets as they ate, waited, shopped, etc. I’m not alone in questioning its merit, there are many, many articles wondering what the long term impact of Twitter will be. However, in the short term, Twitter is growing like crazy, with more than 32 million accessing twitter.com in April of this year. So it is obviously appealing to some, at least enough to set up and test it out once or twice.

I first read Robert Cringely’s views on IBM’s plans to cut its US workforce two years ago, but without the focus on such things corporate that I’ve gained from reading Life Inc. this summer. He has just published an updated post that (sadly) demonstrates both the veracity of the original post and the all consuming corporate soul’s drive to survive, at the cost of even its original home workforce.

RIP John Hughes Sometimes it seems SoCal wundergoon Jimmy Carlin is living out this unholy skateboard version of “Ferris Bueler’s Day Off.” As in, this sort of weird, spastic dorky dude busts various moves, gets the girl, the fancy car, triumphs over adversity and gets away with everything even though he probably shouldn’t. Or maybe he should? His personal brand tends to be rather in-your-face and proactive , but it seems to be working for him, and it wouldn’t be a huge stretch to walk outside and see him lipsyncing “Dream Police” aboard a festive parade float.
How to develop your personal branddynamicbusiness.com

You only get one chance to make a first impression. If you’re a leader or an expert—whether you like it or not —you are captain of your personal brand . At a time when the economy is forcing us all to re-examine how we do business, the importance of personal branding has never been greater. Hesitate and you are out—only the most confident and resilient will survive. Things are changing exponentially and the good news is, that with focus, you can emerge stronger and ahead of the field.

Twitter is such an interesting Social networking tool. Welcome to part 6 of my series on Social Media & Your Job Search . When I first heard about Twitter last year, I didn’t even entertain the thought of microblogging. I saw no value in Twitter whatsoever. For about 6 months or so I wouldn’t even discuss Twitter. It seemed like a waste of time and I don’t have much to waste. But then, I went on vacation last April and I decided to check it out.

Hot:When it comes to how you market yourself, it can really affect your Internet business. That can be good if you’re doing things the right way, but it can certainly hurt you if you focus on the wrong market or if you aren’t giving your target market the message that they need to hear. The good news, though, is that you can have and market your own personal brand and make yourself not only popular but well-respected by people who want to buy the products and services that you have to offer.

Though there are many sites for job seekers, most of them are focused on openings instead of the candidate. In the Web 2.0 era, finally there are some nice online serves that focuses more on the candidate rather than the openings. Jobbox is one such online service where you must have your resume if you are seeking for a new job or it could be your first job. Jobfox is one of the best online services available for job seekers and it’s focused on candidates instead of openings.

In the months ahead, a certain niche branding consultant may or may not become a mainstream branding guru, as he publishes his first book — and, more the point, promotes the shit out of it. When it comes to book promotion, marketing consultants often have an advantage over authors who merely write for a living: employees. In fact that’s how I’m aware of this guy’s forthcoming branding blitz.

We’re back at it again. After Morgan Stanley let a 15-year-old write a research report this summer on how teens consume media which said young people don’t use the microblogging network, a “Teens don’t tweet” refrain spread throughout the blogosphere . A few reports, including this one from Nielsen , supported the idea earlier this month. Now The New York Times started exploring the issue . The Times reports: As the Web grows up, so do its users, and for many analysts, Twitter’s success represents a new model for Internet success.

7 Career Lessons From Ellen Degeneres6figurecareermanagement.com

I recently came across a fun and inspiring talk given by the TV talk-show host and stand-up comedienne Ellen Degeneres . Ellen was speaking to the so-called ‘Catrina Class’ of graduates’ at Tulane University in New Orleans earlier this summer.   The 10-minute talk was peppered with Ellen’s trademark humour coupled with some sage advice for the new graduates. Below are 7 career lessons I picked out from the speech along with how they apply to you and your career:   1.

Years ago, I was  in a meeting with a new Fortune 500 client.  The meeting was chaired by the COO and the purpose of the gathering was for me to present the findings and recommendations from a study they had commissioned me to do.  There were about 15 people present, of which I was the only outsider (the unpopular and often dreaded, “expert consultant”).  As I was presenting, the COO interrupted me with, “your body language is saying something quite different from what you are telling us.”   This stopped me cold, not to mention scared me to death.  I have never forgotten it and in fact, I later made it my business to understand this whole secret language thing.

I’m sure you guys have seen the presentation by David Armano called “ Brand U.O “. And if you haven’t, then its a request to pull over to SlideShar e and go through the presentation once. I know there are already tons of presentations like these  on topics like Digital & Personal Branding but what David presents with his neat diagrams are worth a watch (since as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words) But today, David uploaded a video on the same and sure if you like the presentation, then the talk that David delivers won’t crash your party.

One trend in organizations today that I am not sure existed even ten years ago is the freedom employees have to promote their personal identity on company time. Companies today seem to allow and actually encourage employees to brand themselves separate from the organization.  Whether it is with a personal blog or through authoring a book, employees can have a larger personal following and name recognition than the top leadership of the organization and at times even greater than the organization.  This is true in the corporate world and the church world.
What’s Your Message?rodneysjobquest.wordpress.com

I read a recent post from Brand Curve entitled “Cultivating Your Personal Brand.” This post applies directly to job seekers. While the points it makes about a website or blog may not pertain to everyone, the idea of having consistent messaging does. When writing cover letters and résumés or when going on interviews, you are selling yourself. You want the company to buy into your attributes. You want to be sure that the message you have in your cover letter matches the message in your résumé and the message you convey in your interviews.

Nowadays, it’s hard to find a person who is not involved in any social network. Social networks have millions of users but only a few seriously consider the risks that these sites could pose. Although the impact of social networking on your personal brand hasn’t been scientifically measured yet, clearly, it contributes to as many spectacular successes as failures in job searches and professional careers. The question is- can social networking sites support you or be an obstacle to a job search?
