Be Your Own Brand A Breakthrough Formula for Standing Out from the Crowd Brands are typically associated with products and businesses, but David McNally and Karl Speak suggest the same concept can be applied to individuals and relationships, with powerful results. Be Your Own Brand shows how personal branding, like product branding, creates a special type of relationship fueled by a strong belief system and tied to an emotional connection.

/> Facebook meets FriendFeed — Much of today’s massive coverage of Facebook’s planned acquisition of social network aggregation service FriendFeed seems to presume that readers know what FriendFeed is. My Slate article from last August is still a good intro . FriendFeed now crawls more than 50 sites, and delivers what’s now being called “real-time search.” ‘That means you can leave your search results window open and watch new results pop in at the top of the page, often in a minute or less.

Remember that people judge you by what they see, hear and sense. In the first 30 seconds, the time it will take you to make your elevator pitch, people will form opinions about your economic level, your trustworthiness, your social position, your level of sophistication, social background, your success in present and current endeavors, your character, your future and decide if they like you. Those are some pretty stout decisions to make in 30 seconds or less.

For all our talk of freedom, we Americans LOVE rules… Our favorite sport, football, has the most rules of any sport on the planet. Poker players make up new rules with every hand (”threes and hearts are wild except for the Queen, which you can pass to the right if someone sneezes during play”). Our institutionalized belief systems — whether Rastafarianism, environmentalism, or even Libertarianism — bristle with rules of what can and can’t be done.

Regator is proud to be a sponsor of Pam Slim’s August 15 Atlanta event , where she’ll be giving her valuable insights into creating successful startups. Startups aren’t easy. Don’t let anybody who threw together a $30 million website in 15 minutes during the dot-com boom tell you otherwise. Regator just celebrated its first anniversary and it’s been a year of little failures and successes, of tremendous hope and bothersome doubt, and most of all, of damn hard work 24/7.

This post was inspired by one written by Joe Grimm , the longtime journalism jobs adviser. DigiDave (Dave Cohn) is a living example of this — and naturally, he has written a blog post about the topic. Ryan Sholin cautions us to be authentic in this pursuit — an honest brand is valuable; a fake or inflated brand is detrimental. Greg Linch supplied those last two links in a comment on Joe’s blog post. (See Greg on Twitter .) Lauren Michell Rabaino is a journalism student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and her online portfolio exemplifies many of these points.

This resonates with me so much and I see I jotted down some notes about it before. Re-reading the posts involved, and some others, has set me thinking again. Some significant bookmarks I want to keep to hand:1) Jon Udell, 2001, on the web: an environment in which everyone can produce as well as consume web content. The web began in this state of grace, soon fell from it, and has recently been trying to find its way back. It’s been a hard road, frankly.

Many former staff photographers have never had to think about marketing themselves. As a staffer, the image is the most important thing. But in most of the industries photojournalists are moving into, potential clients and buyers will be just as interested in who you are. I asked three photography consultants to answer these important questions about branding. What advice can you give for developing a personal brand? What are the important elements that go into a brand? How and where should that branding be used once it’s developed? Jade Albert’s website, which is branded to complement her “whimsical, airy” style.

As someone who has been “in the process” of redesigning my online portfolio since January, I was encouraged by Lea Alcantara’s look at redesigning your own site over at A List Apart. This article is a great reminder of the time and effort that should be taken when it comes to your personal brand, from colors to fonts to readability.

In a highly competitive job market the professional resume cover letter becomes even more vital as it is the “sales pitch” of your personal brand. It is the initial introduction to the senior partner and (hopefully) future colleagues. In it, one must be honest, direct, and precise. Think of the type of person that would be the most… 3 Vote(s)
