These websites are also known as Web 2.0 and the definition is an interactive website where the user has the possibility to interact with the webmaster, blogger, or whoever created the content. For the last two days I’ve been experimenting with adding advertising to my blog. Yeah, I know. I’m not sure two days can be called actual experimentation. It’s more like a wild hare, a knot in my stomach, cold feet and a lightbulb moment. (Please excuse the quadruple mixed metaphor.) Some of you may know that the annual Blogher conference came and went not too long ago. It’s an event that’s become pretty significant in the blogosphere, focusing on women bloggers in all their many genres.

I recently saw this post through a link from a high school friend on Facebook . Although I was simply scanning - not paying a lot of attention to the details of most of the entries - I had to read this one twice. The first time, I was somewhat dubious of the author’s story. I mean, John Hughes’ pen pal? C’mon… When would HE have the time to write a little girl from nowhere? But something kept digging at me. And after a day of consideration, I decided to go back and read it again.

Blowtorch + Branding Iron + Chilis = fun! by vissago The short answer: don’t have an online presence and then make headlines for suing your college and blaming them for not getting a job. Individuals with clearly defined values and goals are highly esteemed by employers as these people tend to be more focused and make better-informed decisions. Managing your personal brand takes this maturity to the next level as branding involves moving beyond self-awareness and into the world of perception. It’s all about understanding and managing how others experience you.Read more of this article on the MyPath site: here

It never ceases to amaze me how rude some people can seem in various forms of communication. My mother taught me to smile when talking on the phone, that the act of smiling will come across in my voice, making me sound like the ray of sunshine I am. However, nothing rains on my party more than a “debbie downer” on the phone. If I am supposed to be helping you, it would behoove you to be pleasant, thus making me want to help you even more - right? What is even more perplexing is how some people can sound like angels on the phone, and then you get an email from them that must have been sent from their evil twin locked in the basement.

Are you familiar with the sayings, “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.” or “There is no need to reinvent the wheel”? If a business is already marketing their product or service successfully then why would you want to change that strategy? Simply copy what they are doing (the strategy) and then add in your brand. My suggestion sounds shameless, doesn’t? It sounds like I am saying steal their idea, copy their business model and then laugh all the way to the bank.

Whether you like it or not, the term “Personal Brand” is here to stay. Originally called and still in many places “thought leadership”, it is about being identified as a leader or expert in some respect. Before it was even given a label, personal brands have been there in front of us and usually related to a product or corporate brand. Edison with the light bulb, Einstein with Theoretical Physics, Gates with Microsoft, Jobs with Apple and so on.

I recently ran across an interesting new service in the “personal branding” space. It’s been called “Twitter meets LinkedIn,” and it has the potential to change the way candidates promote themselves, and the way organizations recognize great work. The site is called MeritBuilder , and it is a place for people to collect all of their personal recommendations, praise, and accolades in one place. The site has a feel-good vibe — appropriate to a service focused on appreciation and recognition.
