The MS Meme #18 - mediasnackers.com
07/29/2009
Keeping track of the growing MediaSnackers Meme. (WORLD) We probably weren’t the first to apply the ’snacking’ metaphor to media, although there seems to be a growing adoption in terms of describing the new media landscape—we thought it would be good to keep an eye on the growing MediaSnacking meme: My daily ritual involves as much media snacking, blogging and social networking as I possibly can for my clients and to build own my personal brand. Got to love Deirde’s approach .

I joined Twitter a couple of months ago, but only recently have I been really using it to its full potential. I have thoroughly enjoyed this service and will definitely keep using it. Don’t know what Twitter is? Check out my first post on this topic, where I explain it in “plain english”. Ok, so you must be wondering why in the world you should even consider joining. Here are seven great reasons why I think you should join: 1.

Open-ended interview questions from hiring managers are great ways to solicit information from job applicants. What’s lousy about the open-ended questions, however, is when they are simply open-ended and not open-ended about the job . As a result, “Why should I hire you?” is a dangerous interview question. You have no context with which to orient your answer to what the hiring manager is looking for in the position. So your answer can be spot-on or wildly off base.

Annemarie Cross has written a great article called the “Top ten effective habits of a highly successful networker” Whether currently employed or job searching, networking (online and offline) is a skill we all need to master.  As Annemarie says, “with a tightening job market numerous job seekers have increased their networking endeavours with the hope of tapping into the hidden job market.” The size of the hidden job market is unknown with figures ranging from 30% – 80% being quoted for hidden jobs! In a blog post “The Hidden Job Market – Is it an Urban Myth?” and a LinkedIn discussion on the same topic, I received all sorts of numbers with the average being around 40%.

Hi there, observant reader! Those familiar with my inane, angry, psychotic ramblings insightful posts are accustomed to my personal brand of “you stupid fucking moron, that’s the stupidest fucking idea I’ve ever heard” and “[Howdy S. Thompson]’s opinion is the correct one, ya ‘ol coozbag”. Some thought Ryan Madson would fill in as a closer admirably. Some didn’t. Inquiries were made about a washed-up fatty . They were beautifully untrue. Advice to not sign a washed up midget lover was ignored.

Twitter we’ve all heard about this phenom thingy. What is Twitter exactly, how do you use it properly and why the hell should you most certainly be using it in the real estate or any other industry on the planet? For starters as of today… Twitter is already the 36th most visited website in the world and climbing fast according to Alexa.com, I expect it to hit top 20 website by the end of the year or higher. That’s a pretty good reason to get yourself on there and benefit from the immense traffic on the site.

Here are some tips for a job interview that will help you come out of the process on top. When you walk into a job interview, the product you are selling is YOU. In order to successfully sell yourself, you must market your personal brand. That is, you must build a reputation that qualifies you, and only you, to successfully fulfill the job requirements. The job interview is your time to shine - your time to sell yourself and your abilities. In order to do that, you must have faith in your personal brand.

We’re crazy about the JK Wedding Entrance Dance video, and apparently so are you. As we reported earlier, the video now has over 12 million views and is taking the web by storm. As it turns out, hip hop and R&B artist Chris Brown should be pretty darn crazy about it too. The song that stars alongside the dancing wedding party and the now newlyweds “JK” (Jill Peterson and Kevin Heinz) is none other than the scarlet-letter-wearer Chris Brown’s, Forever .

What does the Sprint-Virgin hookup actually mean for cellular customers? — “ The answer is … probably nothing ,” claims my fellow New York Times Gadgetwise blogger Roy Furchgott. As a guy who reports doggedly on the wireless industry, Roy’s immediate response to the deal is that it won’t close until the end of this year at the earliest. Until then, Sprint and Virgin Mobile will operate as two separate companies. After the deal closes, he reports, Sprint has no plans to shut down its existing prepaid cellular sub-band, Boost Mobile, in favor of Virgin’s prepaid brand.

There is no question that social media has benefits that are still being discovered each day. From managing an online reputation to positioning yourself for a job, the possibilities are endless. With that being said, a personal brand can be just as important as managing the information and flow of a large corporation. For individuals there is a balance to strive for between endless self-promotion and providing a value back to the community of your followers and friends on your networks.  Doing this

I was invited by to attend and live blog at the Affiliate Summit in NYC taking place on August 9-11th at the Hilton Hotel . I’m familiar with both keynote speakers  Chris Brogan , President of New Marketing Labs , and Peter Shankman , founder and CEO of The Geek Factory and have met both, briefly, in the past.

Gabrielle Hennessey at Brand-Yourself.com explains that there are three primary qualities that make up your personal brand: competencies (skills), personality (your goals, morals, and identity), and your value (what you can contribute to an organization). With that said, I decided to write a short post here as a worksheet of what my three qualities consist of: 1.) Competencies: I am skilled in graphic and web design. I am skilled in the necessary computer programs that facilitate my design skills.

Really great article by Dan Schawbel in this week’s issue of BusinessWeek — I’m quoted in the article on how to use Linkedin to get the job you want! While the article is not directly related to using social media to sell more effectively — it is still very interesting and worth the read. Excerpt: “If you rely on job boards or corporate Web sites for your job search, you’ll find yourself unemployed for a very long time. Instead, look to your networks, both in real life and in the virtual world.
