Right now, do me a favor. If you’re left-handed, pick up a pen with your right hand and write your name. If you’re right-handed, use your left hand to write your name. (For the few ambidextrous, well, what can I say - you’re one of the lucky few - I’m afraid I won’t be able to prove my point with you). Now, take a few minutes to think long and hard about what it took for you to do something outside of your comfort zone. If you’re being honest, because using your ‘other hand’ to write doesn’t come naturally to you, you had to talk yourself into doing it. Am I right? Now lets move on to bigger and better things, beyond writing your name illegibly.

Over the past week we’ve talked about branding yourself and have taken the initial steps in explaining how it can help you grow your career . Today we’re going to get into the details a bit by focusing on a piece from Parade Magazine titled How to be Indispensable at Work . I am only going back about 12 months for the list below as most of the job search, networking and LinkedIn related presentations going back 7 years were based on “I Have A Killer Resume Now What? Tips On Being Your Own Headhunter” The list below are all sessions that were delivered in person to groups ranging from 10-250 attendees. Not included in the list are sessions now being done online through Be Your Own Headhunter .

A young Jon Leibowitz Should Jon Stewart change his name back to Jon Leibowitz? Being a non-practicing Jew with an open disdain for the more invasive aspects of formal religion, I would be an unlikely candidate to tackle this issue and that of modern Jewish self-identity. But I dig on media and social commentary so away we go. The Jew-WASPifies-his-name-for-assimilation-purposes-in-order-to-make-it-in-Hollywood phenomenon has been operating since the advent of modern media.

Remember Elle Woods and her scented, pink-paper resume in Legally Blonde? She’d be an anomoly today, as most people don’t print paper resumes anymore. But despite lamentations that “Google is the new resume” or “Resumes are useless in the Internet age,” you still need one if you plan to apply for a position at a large company. Even a social media position.

I couldn’t agree with Tom Peters more in this video. Blogging in the past 9 years has totally changed my life. I still remember a time when I said I blogged and people looked at me with that strange look. Now? I can honestly say I’ve got friends all over the US, Europe and Australia that I know thanks to blogging - some I’ve met in person, some I haven’t, but that doesn’t matter. I don’t discount their friendship based on that. They are my friends just the same.

Hi All, When I conduct Leadership Seminars for Millennial (aka Gen Y) employees, and provide private Leadership Coaching for my Millennial clients , I focus a lot on the importance of building your personal brand. This is key for people already employed, OR people job searching! You need to set yourself apart from the “crowd”. Just as it’s important for a company to have a distinct brand, and a product to have a unique brand, it’s important for “people” to have a brand.

Paul Carr earned a reputation as a sass-mouth, hard-drinking columnist for the freewheeling British news and commentary site guardian.co.uk . Carr’s column, Not Safe For Work, lampooned Web 2.0’s self-styled thought leaders and personal brands, most notoriously shredding the insidery Le Web conference as “ freezing cold, no Internet, boring .” In early 2009, Carr moved from London to San Francisco, hoping to drive his poison pen into the heart of the tech industry.

Last week I spent a few days in New York City. I asked my friend, Tom, what he wanted as a souvenir and he replied, “A photo of the Naked Cowboy .” Even though I haven’t been to NYC in ages, I knew exactly who he meant. For 10 years, Robert Burck (aka the Naked Cowboy ), has been 100% focused on building his personal brand — and lining his grippies with cold hard cash. He can be found strolling Times Square in his underwear and strumming a guitar. Why would anyone do this? Maybe because tourists love to take photos with him and he nets $1,000 in tips A DAY.

Trust me when I say that this post is not for teenagers or tweens, it’s for everyone. And, it’s actually about writing, freelancing and my other usual topics. I promise. It really does have a point. Until this weekend, I’d avoided all the Twilight hype. Robert Pattinson didn’t do anything for me and I don’t really like vampires and scary things – so I just maintained a polite distance. But, let’s be serious, it’s a little hard to escape it when you live online (and have a teeny tiny addiction to celebrity gossip.
