File under: skateboard tricks When the untamed New Jerseyan, slam poet and personal brand that is Mike Vallely parked his black novelty sportscar outside the Berrics’ hallowed walls, we should have known something was up. Inviting the streetplanting hockey blogger to a technical flip-trick contest for which he was ill-suited was silly enough, and while Vallely kept a lid on his famously flaring temper throughout what looked like a pretty lighthearted affair, it stands to reason that he/his people wanted a little sugar to go with the tough flatground medicine that Chris Cole was dishing out.

I don’t have thousands of RSS subscribers to this website, and I probably never will. Mainly down to the fact that I just don’t have the time to be a frequent blogger, and I only visit about 10 other design blogs regularly. I blog and network on social media for the fun of it, and to learn from those more experienced than me, and hopefully provide help for some of those less experienced than me. I don’t have sponsored ads on my site, and I don’t use this blog to acquire new clients, although when that does happen it is a nice bonus.

This week on the Brandmouthing podcast , I talk about the need to manage your personal and professional brands at conferences. Some folks tend to act a little foolish at conferences… especially late night. Bear in mind that many people are snapping pictures and video with their phones, camera, and Flips. Think about how you will look on Flickr, YouTube, Facebook, etc. during downtime at conferences. And be sure to make meals a priority to maintain your energy, as well as to avoid drinking on an empty stomach.

By 2012, almost 1 in 3 American workers will be 50 or older. For multiple reasons, just econmic ones alone, we know that we must keep older people in the workforce. Keep them contributing, performing, succeeding. It seems to me that this will never fully happen unless we change our minds about what it means to be old. Well, okay, how? The NY Times reported that a recent Pew Research study shows that people age 65 believe that old age begins at 75. People under 30 believe that 60 is old. The older we are, the older we believe old age begins. The study also found that most people over 50 feel 10 years younger. If Boomers, a basketball in the garden hose of the U.S.

With so many years spent in the marketing industry, I have seen and heard a lot of sad stories from many associates and business owners. Let us face it. Marketing is not everyone’s cup of tea. Even those who have a thriving business for so many years now have their own team to plan for their marketing endeavors. Often, many business owners and marketers would want to leave the marketing activities to other people if they can help it.
