A key baseline characteristic to have for your professional brand is openness. While other characteristics, such as delivery of your tasks on time and with quality can overpower other professional traits, your openness will help your personal brand over the long term. Openness means you have to have enough confidence in your ability to be comfortable in your work to allow others to criticize your work without being defensive. Openness means a willingness to integrate your work with others so a better overall work product is produced.

- A normal guy would say, “I love you.” EDWARD WOULD SAY, “You are my life now.” - A guy normal guy would say, “You make me happy.” EDWARD SAYS, “You are my personal brand of heroine. Everything about you invites me in.” - As you leave the house, a guy would say, “Bye! See Yah!” EDWARD WOULD SAY, “Hurry back to me.” - When you’re far away, a guy would say, “I miss you.” EDWARD SAYS, “It’s like you’ve taken half myself with you.” - If you die, a normal guy would find another.

I just got an email from a GM (General Manager) at Microsoft who is giving a presentation soon about “How to be an effective IC (Individual Contributor)” and he’s collecting best practices. He wanted a brain dump from me and others on tips. Here’s my exact email. NOTE: Dear Reader, you may have heard some of these from earlier blog posts. Hm, not sure I have enough context from your email to help, but I’ll try, assuming I understand the question. Let me know if I can help in/during your presentation.

Isn’t it funny, how ideas spread? I heard recently about how sheep in Yorkshire have learned to cross cattle grids by rolling over them. They have been confronted with this challenge for at least a hundred years and have only just figured it out. Yet the truly amazing thing is that sheep in Australia made the same advance at the same time! Do you suppose they emailed one another? I experienced something of this phenomenon myself this past week.

The analysis below is an update to my earlier post. This outline forms the baseline of a discussion Alice Wang (Director, Burton Group) and I will lead at a workshop next Monday sponsored by Project Concordia. The workshop session will cover “Use Cases Driving Identity in Enterprise 2.0: The Consumerization of IT”. It’s not too late to register for this event - but if you cannot attend, feel free to comment here, or cross-cite/comment on your own blog.ThesisAs organizations explore the use of social networking, the enterprise is no longer the only participant in managing identity.

Did you ever send an email that you regretted? Perhaps you left out an attachment, or you did not carefully proofread and hit “send” prematurely. We all have such email regrets. These mis-steps momentarily tarnish our brand, but they’re not brand killers. But can one email diminish or even torpedo your brand? Oh Yes! And here’s an example of a CEO’s brand that will take some time to realign. Lessons for us all from the following brand fiasco.

If you’re a social media marketer or internet marketer, odds are you’ve heard this phrase before… Everyone seems to be talking about ‘building your value’ and ‘giving value’ when you build your personal brand as a social media entrepreneur. We live in an odd society. We worship the successful, yet vilify their path. Being successful and at the top of your profession takes hard work. It takes the type of hard work most people call unreasonable and it is unreasonable. It’s absolutely unreasonable to work has hard as Tiger Woods, or cellist Yo Yo Ma.

I have referred to business author Bruna Martinuzzi’s 2007 article Optimism: The Hidden Asset previously on this blog ( here and here , to be precise; and read it here! ) as a wise and pragmatic exploration of a positive character trait that tends to come in handy for anyone looking to succeed in marketing, or anywhere in business…or life itself. Optimism is just one of a wide array of highly desirable character traits, including humility, empathy and generosity, to name just a few.

The following is excerpted with permission from Managing Brand You: 7 Steps to Creating Your Most Successful Self by Jerry S. Wilson and Ira Blumenthal (AMACOM 2008). I’ve written that you need to market yourself when you’re looking for a new job , but you also need to market yourself to grow your career. And step #1 in doing this is deciding what “brand” for want to become (what you want to be known for.) This post and its follow-up in a few days will get us started on the “marketing yourself in your career” discussion.
