The greatest trick that Micheal Jackson ever pulled on this world is asking them to “Beat It”. Here’s a man who sang in his own terms, danced in his own terms, lived and died in his own terms. And you can be Black or white or any shades of gray in between, you cannot deny the tremor that the world felt with every click of his moonwalking heels. As the messages pour in from all corner of the world, we make a silent tribute to the biggest brand in music.

You don’t really have a personal brand until you can get nearly 10,000 Twitter followers with one tweet. It’s even more amazing when you can have all of those followers wait patiently and breathlessly, on the edge of their seats, for months on end, for your very next tweet. It used to be that people followed you on Twitter because they liked what you had to say. At least it was when I started. There are people who still do (myself included), but now we have an influx of celebrities and

You don’t need an expensive marketing firm, or even a friend who works in marketing, to manage your personal brand online. Some of the most powerful tools for monitoring your brand are the free email alert mechanisms available at your search engine of choice. Setting Google Alerts. While I’ve been known to egosurf my own name online every once in a while, setting a Google Alert on my name means I don’t have to do it so much. Every time Google finds a web page with my name on it, it emails me.

by Jessica Slevin This afternoon I had the opportunity to attend Internfest, an event put on by the Council of Public Relations Firms for PR interns in New York City. The panelists spoke on a variety of topics but soon enough the discussion inevitably turned to social media. Let’s face it – social media is becoming increasingly relevant for this industry every day. There is no way to ignore it, and as one speaker pointed out, if you try to ignore it you are only doing your clients a disservice.

Warren Buffett and Bill Gates Have Nothing Over You. In American society, branding yourself an expert in anything can lead to ridicule and suspicion. “Who is he/she anyway…I know more than this expert or that…” You are probably right. How do experts get branded as experts? Well, it starts by truly defining your personal brand and [...]

In discussing personal branding, most people consider how it applies in the online environment, because, after all, it’s the Internet that has given each of us a very public voice, and promoted the “need” for personal brand definition. Many times, I’ve heard professionals describe personal branding as “essential” for anyone working in the online environment. It’s a “business imperative”. According to many, the global financial crisis has only emphasized the already-accepted truth that personal branding is a necessity in the modern world.

By Dan Schawbel (How to Change the World) We all have personal brands because we’re always being judged based on first impressions and we always have to sell ourselves in various life situations, including pitching to venture capitalists and influencing management to let us take on the next big project. Personal branding can be a major differentiator for you and allow you to gain opportunities that you wouldn’t have received otherwise. Here are ten tips for building a powerful personal brand.

I keep getting refrains of songs in my head for this recap of summer scents. How about Joe Cocker! Ayala Sender of Ayala Moriel perfumes invited me to participate in today’s summer scent story. Ten blogs are participating and you’ll see the full list with links at the bottom of this post. I’m a little late getting mine together, except in my mind, because I’m just newly back in town and catching up is more than I anticipated.

A few of you already know that I create custom-illustrated avatars , but did you also know that these can be used for more than just Twitter ? These little personalized icons are used in nearly every online service out there right now. Websites like Facebook , MySpace , Virb , LinkedIn , Tumblr , Posterous , Gravatar (an engine that serves up avatars for blog comments), Google profiles, and dozens of other possibilities. Lea Alcantara has even used the illustration that I created as a integral part of her personal brand.

Credit: Geekadam While speaking at the intimate and immensely valuable Zappos Insights event (Zappos Live), I shared thoughts of how the culture of any company or brand is as strong as the individual personification of it. Everything starts and fortifies with you. Your actions and words online are indeed extensions to how people interpret, perceive, and react to the brand your represent. Concurrently, you also represent your personal brand – the digital identity that’s established through the collection of digital shadows you cast across the social web.

There is an inherent contradiction in vendors saying the industry analysts are not relevant in the age of social media, while at the same time spending tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars on research reprints like the Gartner Magic Quadrant or Forrester Wave. If the analysts are no longer influential – some vendor executives actually make that declarative of a statement – then why are their companies wasting the money spent on reprints? Reprints are not chump change as Gartner in its Q1 earnings call revealed that it makes about $7 million per year in reprint rights.

This is a guest post by Chris Perry , of Career Rocketeer . There are countless approaches you can take to successfully pursue employment opportunities in your MBA job search, many of which entail some use of web tools, job search engines and professional networks. My father-in-law has a favorite saying, “You can’t build up by tearing down.” So why do so many people go for the subtle (or not so subtle) rips on people in social networks? Is it easier because we are not face-to-face? I have seen status updates, tweets, etc that are downright mean. It’s just stupid. If you want to build a good brand (personal or business), you need to stay clear of the slime. What’s your tip on how NOT to build your brand? Image credit: Wolfgang Staudt
